Ireland told to impose child protections in Gambling Regulation Bill

The Government of Ireland has been warned to recognise children’s exposure to gambling marketing in media and sports when finalising the regulatory terms of the Gambling Regulation Bill of Ireland (GRB).

The warning comes from BMC Public Health, a research agency conducting a “qualitative study exploring children’s exposure to and understanding of gambling marketing, risks, and harms in Ireland.”

Research was commissioned due to increased concerns about the “normalisation of gambling in sports” and reports from Irish public health agencies of a “significant increase in underage gambling.”

In its abstract, the report notes that Ireland currently has insufficient evidence on how gambling advertising is consumed and interpreted by children: “To build this evidence base and provide granular broad-level data, this study explored the sport consumption habits and views of Irish children (aged 14–17 years) on their exposure, awareness, and perceptions of the relationship between sport and g..

UKGC nets consistency on gambling participation rates of new GSGB

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has published wave-1 datasets of Year-2 (2024) of the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB) providing statistics on gambling participation.

The redesigned survey forms part of the Gambling Commission’s new operating structure monitoring UK gambling prevalence and activities under a new methodology and approach to data collection.

As previously noted, the Commission supports a new survey “to establish a new baseline for understanding gambling behaviours in Great Britain.”

The Commission stands by its new methodology to provide the most comprehensive evaluation of gambling participation undertaken by a regulatory authority.

For 2024, wave-1 datasets on gambling participation have been published for fieldwork conducted on a sample size of 5191 adults aged 18+, by the National Centre of Social Research (NatCen) for the period of January-to-April.

Once more, the Commission reminds stakeholders that datasets of the GSGB are not comparable with previo..

EGBA: Finland’s gambling roadmap must ignore affiliate and bonus restictions

Finland’s government has been advised to maintain an open approach to marketing and customer incentives as it begins its roadmap to launch a new gambling regime in 2027.

The recommendation comes from the European Gaming Betting Association (EGBA), the Brussels-based trade group promoting unified standards for regulated European gambling markets.

The EGBA welcomes Finland initiating a timeframe of 2024 to 2026 to launch its new gambling regime, ending its status as the “only EU member state with a monopoly system for online gambling.” The trade body welcomes Finland’s shift towards a multi-licensing approach for online gambling as a positive change.

Proceedings began in July with the Ministry of the Interior launching a consultation seeking feedback on how to structure Finland’s online gambling market to ensure consumers are protected from harm.

The EGBA supports the decision to withdraw state-owned monopoly operator Veikkaus Oy from Finland’s new online gambling marketplace in 2027..

Sweden has recorded total gross gaming revenues (GGR) of SEK 6.89bn (€602m) during Q2 2024.

The total GGR figure was revealed by the Gambling Inspectorate Spelinspektionen’s monitoring of gambling activities for Swedish licensed land-based and online businesses.

Ofcom praises Twitch for accuracy of adult content safeguards

UK broadcasting regulator Ofcom has recognised an improvement in Twitch’s accuracy in labelling mature content after reviewing the streaming platform’s classification guidelines.

In June 2023, Twitch updated its content classification guidelines due to a rise in content aimed at mature audiences, including gambling streams.

The platform now requires streamers to apply content classification labels that indicate the presence of mature themes in their streams.

Twitch provided streamers with six specific labels for mature content: mature-rated games, sexual themes, drugs, intoxication or excessive tobacco use, violent and graphic depictions, significant profanity or vulgarity, and gambling.

As the UK’s regulator for video-sharing platforms and online safety, Ofcom evaluated Twitch’s rule changes and published its findings earlier this month.

The 66-page report found that content labelling improved “significantly” after the introduction of CCLs, but noted that viewing behaviour and th..
