Half of Ontario Super Bowl viewers will bet on game

It’s Super Bowl season again, and almost half of Ontarians who plan to watch Sunday’s Big Game will be betting on it too.

A survey conducted by Leger for the Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) suggested that 63% of Ontarians plan to watch the Kansas City Chiefs square off against the Philadelphia Eagles.

However, less than half of the viewers (48%) intend to place at least one bet on it. That is up from 41% last year but is down from a high of 54% in 2023, which marked the first Super Bowl since Ontario opened up its saturated commercial online gambling market.

The propensity to bet on the Super Bowl skews towards older generations. The report found that Ontario sports bettors over 45 are more likely to bet on the game (52%) than those aged 18-44 (45%). White viewers are significantly more likely to bet on Super Bowl LIX (54%) than Ontarians who are Black, Indigenous or people of colour (42%).

UK gambling self-exclusion service GAMSTOP has informed its industry partners of an increasing number of self-excluding persons under the age of 25.

The organisation behind the UK’s national self-exclusion service for online gambling has identified under-25s as the demographic most at-risk of developing problem gambling harms.

According to GAMSTOP’s statistics, a 31% rise has been noticed year-on-year for under-25s registering with the service during the latter half of 2024.

These figures signal that consumers aged between 16 and 24 now make up almost a quarter of new GAMSTOP registrants, while marking asharper rise than the 12% increase witnessed in the first half of 2024.

Swedish operators set for KYC overhaul

Sweden’s Spelinspektionen has told operators to increase due diligence for high risk customers, as it outlines new guidelines for online operators.

Central to the guidance is the strengthening of protections against money laundering and terrorist financing.

Spelinspektionen’s Director General, Camilla Rosenberg, stated: “The gambling industry is a risk area for money laundering, and we have seen a need for further clarification and guidance in this area. We have therefore revised our guidance and are also conducting a new risk assessment.”

Operators have been told to increase checks around the source of funds for large deposits and determine whether the customer is a Politically Exposed Person (PEP).

Further requirements stipulate enhanced due diligence (EDD) for high-risk customers, which includes additional verification of income sources and bank statements.

To improve customer due diligence, operators are urged to implement ‘routine internal controls’ to ensure that thorough ..

Fiona Palmer: GAMSTOP
GAMSTOP has alerted its partners of a “surge in self-exclusion of under-25s”, identifying this demographic as carrying the most significant risk of developing problem gambling harms.

The steward of the UK’s national self-exclusion scheme for online gambling, GAMSTOP, has reported a 31% year-on-year increase in under-25s registering with the service during the second half of 2024.

Of concern, GAMSTOP notes that “consumers aged 16-24 now account for nearly one in four (24%) of new GAMSTOP registrants”, signaling a shift towards younger individuals seeking self-exclusion.

During the second half of 2024, GAMSTOP recorded a 14% increase in self-exclusion registrations, attributed to major summer sporting events such as the UEFA Euro Championships and the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

KSA: Real-time RG policies well received by Dutch gambling

Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) has confirmed that the updated regulations around financial risk checks have been successfully implemented by licensed operators.

The new Responsible Gaming Policy was brought into force by the Dutch regulator in October last year, when it introduced tighter monitoring of players’ financials so that operators can intervene in ‘real time’ when necessary to prevent damage from excessive gambling.

Under the new texts, players are considered to be no longer capable of ‘bearing the financial consequences of their player behaviour’ when one of five key conditions occur within a calendar month.

The conditions applied are:

A player cannot make a deposit on their gaming account due to insufficient balance;
A player makes net deposits that make up more than the recreational part of their monthly net income;
A player makes net deposits that make up 30% or more of their monthly net income;
A player between the ages of 18 and 24 makes net deposits of more than €300;
