EC alerted to ‘system failures’ enabling illegal gambling to flourish

The responsibility of Big tech companies to impose advertising controls has been placed under scrutiny in new research by the European Commission (EC).

Concerns about advertising controls have intensified about how major platforms such as Meta (Facebook and Instagram), Google, and Apple verify advertisers to avoid online scams. The EC commissioned the research in the interests of its supervisory and monitoring work.

Online gambling is amongst six advertising fields deemed to be highly targeted by online scammers, with others including financial services, investment, romance, e-commerce and personal health.

Under review, questions are raised on how major platforms verify specific advertisers to prevent fraud and precautions taken to close loopholes allowing scam actors.

Research is undertaken by Open Evidence and Spark Legal to uncover vulnerabilities in media and support the development of Europe’s Digital Services Act (DSA).
