RGC praises efficiency of YGAM ‘Mindful Resilience’ programme

Ygam’s ‘Mindful Resilience’ workshops have been validated by a Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) evaluation, one of its partners in the programme, showing a positive response from participants.

The RGC reported that 91% of participants in the workshops rated the programme as ‘good’ or ‘very good’.

Around two-thirds of participants – which included GPs and nurses, among other healthcare professionals – also stated that they had begun implementing lessons from the workshops into day-to-day practices.

Mindful Resilience was launched in September 2020 as a joint-initiative of Ygam, the RGC, Betknowmore UK and the University of Bournemouth, with the objective of training healthcare professionals on gambling addiction treatment, and ran until 2022.

Linda Scollins Smith, Director of Programmes at Ygam, said: “The findings of this evaluation are encouraging and a positive step in addressing the need for better understanding of gaming and gambling harms within the health care sector.

Apollo Entertainment takes RG action after six-figure AGCO fine

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has served Apollo Entertainment with a Notice of Monetary Penalty totalling $100,000 for failing to adhere to its responsible gambling standards.

Apollo entered the Ontario market last September, receiving licenses from the AGCO for seven igaming sites:

Zodiac Casino
Yukon Gold Casino
Luxury Casino
Grand Mondial Casino
Casino Classic

However, the regulator announced last week that the firm has violated multiple responsible gaming provisions in the Registrar’s Standards for Internet Gaming, including:

Failing to conduct required interventions with players who may be experiencing gambling related harms. This included the case of a player experiencing over $2m in losses in under four months without receiving interventions from the gaming site operator during that period.
Failing to implement an adequate voluntary self-exclusion program, as well as providing insufficient tools for players to se..

GambleAware data shows ‘significant link’ between betting and mental health

Using data from GambleAware, the relationship between mental health and gambling harms has shown new and revealing links between mental health and betting.

Studies by Alma Economics – which used the gambling harm education group’s, Annual GB Treatment and Support Survey.1 – found that there is a ‘significant link’ between higher rates of gambling harms and worse mental health.

It showed that a one unit increase in Problem Gambling Severity Index (PGSI) 2 score increased the probability of someone having a diagnosed mental health condition by 3%.

For example, the group detailed, an individual with a PGSI score of zero has a 22% probability of having a mental health diagnosis, while an individual with a PGSI score of eight has a 41% probability of having a mental health condition.

GambleAware Chief Executive, Zoë Osmond, said: “The relationship between gambling and mental health is significant for medical practitioners and gambling support organisations, as it can influence the ty..

Virginia Lottery fines Betway $20K for contacting self-excluded patrons

Betway has to pony up $20,000 for violations related to vendor registration and responsible gambling policies in Virginia.

According to the report posted by the Virginia Lottery, in May of this year, Betway accidentally communicated to a group of self-excluded individuals about “account technology issues and account creation”. Six of those individuals were on the Virginia Lottery’s self-exclusion list, while another 94 were on Betway’s internal list of individuals who were either self-excluding or on a cooling-off period.

In addition to that violation, Betway also self-reported to the lottery that its trading partner, which is part of Betway’s larger parent company, Super Group, was not properly registered as a vendor in the state.

Betway has agreed to pay the $20,000 and told the lottery it has taken steps to remedy the vendor issue and ensure the mistake involving self-excluded patrons will not happen again.

SBC Americas reached out to Betway for comment but has not received a re..

Safe Bet Show: bringing fixed-odds racing betting to the US

Up in the hot seat of Martin Lycka’s Safe Bet Show this month is Dallas Baker, Head of International Operations at BetMakers, who laid out the case for rolling out fixed-odds racing betting in the US.

Baker explained some of the benefits that the industry has seen in his native Australia from the fixed-odds betting legalization, but this has yet to take off in the US.

Currently, only New Jersey offers legal fixed-odds betting on horse racing, but Baker noted that there is ample opportunity for the sportsbook industry if this was to expand.

“When you’re talking about the third or fourth biggest sport, which probably racing should evolve to in the US, that’s the one big slot that still needs to be added into the mix. I think once you see that, that’s the evolution of the whole market. But I think racing anywhere in the world will normally sit in the top three or four sports just by the nature of it.”

BetMakers operates the Monmouth Bets brand in New Jersey, which focuses on fixed-..

Stakeholders were notified that “the Gambling Commission and GambleAware have agreed to ringfence a proportion of the funding to help stabilise the system of gambling harm prevention, support and treatment”.

A stop-gap fund is required to support organisations in England, Scotland, and Wales affected by potential changes in funding following the Government’s intention to introduce a statutory levy on problem gambling research, education and treatment (RET).

UKGC hands £32.8m to GambleAware in support of levy transition period

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has allocated £32,844,197.31 to GambleAware for the creation of a ‘system stabilisation’ in regards to a transition period from voluntary funding to a statutory levy.

This is the latest allocation of funds gained by the UKGC through regulatory settlements, and is intended to “stabilise the system of gambling harm prevention, support and treatment” during the changeover. A previous high of $8.8m was also issued to GambleAware in April 2020.

A statutory levy to fund research, education and treatment (RET) was one of the biggest and most highly debated changes of the UK gambling white paper review of the 2005 Gambling Act.

Zoë Osmond, Chief Executive of GambleAware, previously called for the government to “move with urgency” regarding a range of consultations associated with the white paper, the first of which were addressed earlier in the week.

She said: “We welcome government plans to introduce a statutory levy as outlined in its Gambling white pape..
