NCAA finds prohibitions don’t stop unwanted gambling by students

The NCAA recently held a discussion on sports betting policies and concluded that prohibitions on gambling are “ineffective” at preventing unwanted gambling. The college athletics association’s Committee on Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports (CSMAS) held an informational discussion on the topic in recent days. Committee members met in Indianapolis to discuss the possible deregulation of sports betting, which could allow student-athletes…

SOFTSWISS provides donation for flood victims in Poland

SOFTSWISS has provided support for victims of the recent flooding in Poland as part of its ongoing global charity work.

Following a recent campaign to support victims in flood-hit regions in Brazil, the igaming solutions provider has launched a similar initiative in Southern Poland, a region devastated by floods caused by Storm Boris last month.

After dozens of towns were forced to undertake urgent evacuations, SOFTSWISS has made a financial donation to Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy, a Polish charity providing aid for flood victims.

The provider will also make use of its two development offices based in Poland, with SOFTSWISS employees helping to pack boxes of over 100kg of essential items, such as food, hygiene products, matches, candles and batteries.

These items were then delivered to Caritas Polska, another charitable organisation focussed on relief efforts in flood-hit areas.

“Unfortunately, natural disasters happen, and we don’t want to stand idly by. We strive to h..

Lula demands Bolsa Família protections prior to Bets launch

The launch of Brazil’s forthcoming betting market must be safeguarded by a federal policy on gambling addiction to eliminate social harms, such as public debt.

This demand was issued by President Inácio Lula da Silva during ongoing meetings with senior ministers regarding the vulnerabilities of the betting regime, alongside discussions on a federal framework to regulate fixed-odds betting and online gambling in Brazil.

Last week, Lula held meetings with Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and Ministers Rui Costa (Civil House), Fernando Haddad (Finance), Wellington Dias (Social Development and Assistance for Families), Nísia Trindade (Health), André Fufuca (Sports), and Ricardo Lewandowski (Justice).

The President expressed direct concerns over gambling addiction and the social harm caused by citizens accruing debt through gambling activities, which he identified as liabilities that must be addressed by the betting regime.

Lula’s concerns about public debt have been heightened by the rec..

Spelinspektionen develops new channelisation rate calculation method

Spelinspektionen has developed a new method for calculating the Swedish gambling market’s channelisation rate to the country’s licensed operators.

The degree of channelisation is described by the Swedish gambling authority as measuring “how much of Swedes’ gambling takes place at gambling companies with a Swedish license”, referring to the competitive market which mainly consists of online casinos and bookmakers.

In regulatory letter FI2023/03130, Spelinspektionen was commissioned by the Swedish government to develop a new method to determine the degree of channelisation in the country’s gambling market, as well as propose an indicator for reporting in the budget bill.

As such, the authority evaluated several methods to figure out which method or methods should be used.

Through its research, Spelinspektionen’s new method determined that four indicators need to be used to calculate the channelisation rate: a questionnaire survey for players, measurement of internet traffic, estimati..

Inspectorate’s new metrics set Swedish gambling channelisation at 86%

Spelinspektionen, Sweden’s Gambling Inspectorate, has revised the methodology for calculating the channelisation rate of Sweden’s online gambling marketplace.

Deemed the key measure of the regulatory balance in Sweden’s online gambling market, the channelisation rate represents the percentage of wagering volume accounted for by licensed operators.

Sanctioned as a regulatory assignment in 2023, the Inspectorate was commissioned by the government to redevelop the “calculation metrics for the channelisation of the Swedish gaming market.”

The assignment was to be reported on for the 2024 budget as part of a broader initiative to ensure that government authorities can monitor gambling trends and risks to national consumers.

As reported: “The Inspectorate believes that four different indicators together can give a picture of the degree of channelisation, and based on these indicators, the degree of channelisation for 2023 is calculated at 86%.”

The new channelisation rate was calculated..

Lula hosts senior ministers meeting to fix Bets vulnerabilities

President Inácio Lula da Silva will host a meeting of senior ministers to address outstanding concerns regarding the launch of the Bets regime, the federal framework to regulate fixed-odds betting and online gambling in Brazil.

The Ministers of Finance, Healthcare, Sports, Public Welfare, and Social Development will meet with Lula, today, to review the Bets regime’s progress towards its intended launch on 1 January 2025.

Lula seeks to address concerns following reports that beneficiaries of Bolsa Família, Brazil’s financial aid programme for poor families, had spent BRL 3bn (€500m) on betting platforms, with transactions recorded by the government’s Pix payment system.

An intervention is expected, as Lula will likely endorse the measure proposed by Febraban, the Federation of Brazilian Banks, which has called on authorities to adopt an instant ban on the use of credit cards and overdrafts for gambling transactions.

Furthermore, Lula will order the ministries to collaborate and deve..

James Browne: Ireland GRB to take hard line on gambling conduct and criminality

The Dáil of Ireland has resumed ‘committee stage’ discussions on the Gambling Bill of Ireland (GRB), which will implement a new regulatory framework for Irish gambling.

Sanctioned in November 2022, the passage of the GRB has been stuck in the committee stage of the Dáil since July 2023. The tri-party government has set no timeline for the GRB’s ascension into law, despite mounting pressure from Irish legal authorities to settle on its determination.

Led by James Browne (Fianna Fáil), Minister of State for the Department of Justice, a committee at Oireachtas resumed discussions on the GRB and the articles that will replace the near-century-old Betting Act of 1931.

Ministers probed Browne on the applicability and technical provisions of the GRB applied into law, as the mandate to modernise Irish gambling and its governance of all gambling disciplines (retail, online, horse racing, and lotteries).

No Exemptions on Licensing

On licensing, Minister Browne stated there are “no broad exe..

FanDuel sued by $22m embezzler for fostering his gambling addiction

The former Jacksonville Jaguars employee who embezzled more than $22 million from the NFL franchise is taking legal action against FanDuel and its owner.

According to a complaint filed in the U.S. District for the Southern District of New York, Amit Patel is suing FanDuel, its owner Flutter Entertainment, Fox Corp. and Boyd Gaming for allegedly fostering his gambling addiction by incentivizing play. Patel alleges FanDuel and the other defendants in the suit “actively and intentionally targeted and preyed” on him leading him to gamble more than $20 million over a four-year period.

Patel illegally used the Jaguars’ virtual credit card (VCC) to transfer the money to FanDuel. He also spent millions on expensive gifts and trips including a $95,000 Patek Philippe wristwatch. Patel also used the VCC to spend more than $75,000 on private jets, $278,000 on vacation travel, and $47,113 on a putter used by golf legend Tiger Woods in 1996.

In the suit, Patel alleges FanDuel showered him with mo..
