Spillemyndigheden sees self-exclusion registry reach 50,000 in April

The Danish Gambling Authority, Spillemyndigheden, has released the latest data from ROFUS, the country’s self-exclusion register, highlighting that the number of signees stands at 50,000 in April.

ROFUS was first established in 2012 as part of a wider political strategy to curb gambling harm in Denmark.

The scheme has since been quite successful in providing player support, going from the 1,500 registrants at the end of 2012 to the current 50,000 listed individuals.

This success has been significantly boosted by a number of regulations aimed at promoting ROFUS. At the start of 2020, licensed online gambling providers and land-based casinos became obliged to refer to the scheme across all of their gambling products. This practice also became a requirement for land-based betting in 2023.

When signing up for ROFUS, players are presented with multiple choices on the duration of the self-exclusion period. This varies between 24 hours, one, three or six months. Of these, the most pre..

Spillemyndigheden issues three orders to Mr Green for AML failures

Spillemyndigheden, the Danish gambling authority, has issued three orders and a reprimand to Mr Green Limited for breaching the country’s anti-money laundering act.

Following an AML compliance inspection of the operator, the orders were administered to Mr Green by the authority on April 10 for AML breaches on risk assessment, on procedures for internal controls and for failing to ensure that controls are carried out.

In addition, the reprimand was handed to the operator for breaching the rules on notification in the AML act.

Regarding insufficient risk assessment, Spillemyndigheden stated that the decision was made as “no separate risk assessment has been made of the individual identified risks associated with Mr Green’s business model, including payment solutions, and the risk factors associated with it”.

The authority noted that section 7(1) of the AML act states that undertakings subject to the act must “identify and assess the risk that the undertaking may be misused for money ..

Croatia snap election sees gambling overhaul become a bargaining chip

A pledge has been made by MOST, the ‘Sovereign Party of Croatia’, to overhaul the nation’s gambling laws by implementing a ban on advertising and introducing new protections to curb addiction.

MOST’s pledge carries significance as next week Croatia will hold a snap election on Wednesday, 17 April, due to the fallout of the coalition government led by the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).

Party leader, Nikola Grmoja, MOST’s candidate for President declared that the opposition needed to wake up and recognize “Croatia’s problem with gambling addiction that is not discussed within political circles”.

Grmoja noted “frightening statistics” of gambling trends in Croatia, as “40% of juveniles are gambling on a daily basis” and public health agencies report that “40,000 Croats are addicted to gambling, a figure impacting 200,000 families”.

Ahead of next week’s election, MOST published its ‘programme to fight gambling addiction’, pledging to implement a blanket ban on gambling advertising, by..

Ex-Ohtani interpreter to reportedly plead guilty to federal charges

The former interpreter of MLB superstar Shohei Ohtani is in negotiations to plead guilty following allegations of stealing million to wager on sports, according to the New York Times.

Ippei Mizuhara is expected to plead guilty to federal charges after allegedly participating in an illegal gambling operation run by former bookie Matthew Bowyer. Mizuhara, who was subsequently fired by the Los Angeles Dodgers, allegedly siphoned at least $4.5 million from Ohtani’s bank account to Bowyer to cover gambling losses. Mizuhara is alleged to have changed the alert and confirmation settings of Ohtani’s bank account.

Bank information showed Ohtani’s name on two $500,000 payments marked as loans.

Ohtani, who signed a record 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers last December, has denied any wrongdoing following the allegations against Mizuhara.

“I’ve never bet on baseball or any other sports or asked someone to do it on my behalf,” said Ohtani during a team press conference last month..

KSA imposes penalty on Casbit Group for illegal offering

Kansspelautoriteit, the Dutch gaming authority, has issued an order subject to a penalty on Casbit Group NV for offering games of chance without a licence.

The KSA stated that it informed Casbit at an earlier stage that it intended to impose an order subject to a penalty on the operator for illegal games of chance on its lala.bet website.

Casbit responded by removing accessibility to its website for players in the Netherlands, but upon re-inspection, the authority claims the website is still accessible in the country, so a penalty has been imposed.

With the order subject to penalty, KSA has called on Casbit to immediately stop the illegal offering, with a penalty of €280,000 per week with a maximum of €840,000 being imposed if this is not complied with.

An objection has been lodged against this decision.

Earlier this year, the authority presented a new supervisory agenda as part of its ‘Safe Gaming’ mission and public objectives to bolster player protection.

Detailed within its 2..

ANJ sees ‘observable results’ on reducing excessive gambling in France

Jake Pollard
Efforts to reduce problem gambling are making progress but remain a priority, says French gambling regulator ANJ. The monitoring policy instituted by the Autorité Nationale des Jeux with the aim of preventing excessive gambling has paid off and produced “observable results” over the past 12 months, said the French gambling regulator.

ANJ published its fourth report on the actions of online operators, those of the two offline monopolies FDJ (lottery) and PMU (horse racing tote) and the 203 land-based casinos, seven gaming clubs and 235 racecourses operating in France, and said that the objective of reducing the number of problem gamblers, ANJ’s strategic priority for the next two years, “must be pursued by all gambling operators”.

According to a study published by the Observatoire des Jeux in 2019, gross revenues from problem gamblers accounted for 38.3% of the French industry’s total figure, with almost 21% coming from excessive gamblers, the total number of players amou..

Supreme Court of Spain sides with Jdigital on Decree annulments

The Supreme Court of Spain has ‘partially annulled’ certain articles of the Royal Decree on Advertising, the mandate which imposed federal restrictions on gambling advertising across Spanish media.

The Royal Decree was the headline measure of former Minister of Consumer Affairs, Alberto Garzon, who in 2020 was appointed by Spain’s PSOE-coalition government to oversee the federal reform of Spanish gambling laws.

Drafted in November 2020, the Decree’s restrictions limited advertising for betting houses and games of chance to the early morning hours of 1-to-5 am across all media platforms.

Furthermore, from 2022 onwards, the Decree imposed a blanket ban on all forms of gambling sponsorships in professional sports (excluding state lotteries), with substantial fines for non-compliance.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs was challenged by the trade bodies of Jdigital, Spain’s online gambling trade association, and the Information Media Association (AMI), who questioned the federal applicat..
